La Granja del Pollo Asado, Madrid 09-2019

The final lunch in Madrid before leaving was one I wanted paella. Unfortunately nothing was open before 12, which limited the time and effort required to have it. Instead we went for the local roast chicken place, run by Chinese people, but still cooking up a mean roast chicken and some delicious chicken rice also.

€8 for a whole chicken is not bad at all. Not what I would usually go for in Spain, but fast local food when required.

Mahoudrid, Madrid 03-2017

There was 2 long hours to wait in Madrid T1. There weren't many food options without being able to go through security or change terminals. In the end the only option was Mahoudrid which at least also has a large sitdown area.

It wasn't a particularly Spanish introduction but the burger and potatoes were unexpectedly good. The burger was without asking cooked with a soft medium rare centre and the potatoes were crisp and seasoned. As part of the meal deal they let me change my drink for a bottle of water (with a higher cost) which served me for the next 2 weeks. Gracias.

Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid 06-2012

One of my favourite things to do in each city is to visit the markets. Food markets are the only ones I frequent, loosely browsing at fresh items but more often looking for ready to eat items for a snack, a picnic or a quick social gathering.

Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid is one of my favourite in the world. It only occupies a small building, but the excellence of items and its central location next to the Plaza Mayor make it worth a visit.

My favourites are the jamon iberico bellota reserva, including cheaper versions such as floss, salchichon (sausages) and paleta (front legs), the freshly shucked oysters and pinxtos served on bread. There is also a lot of cheese, olives, sweets, icecream and fresh fish.

There is something for everyone.
